Condolence: Jim was an inspiring colleague. He shared his enthusiasm for the Close-Up trip to Washington DC with me when I started a program at another school. He served as a guide to many of the highlights of the trip for us sponsors including many evenings spent socializing while solving world problems. His belief in connecting kids and city councils continues to be a major component of my civic education work. Plus, he was just a joy to be around. Kent

Condolence: Mr. Gillen was my favorite teacher at LHS. It is rare when someone can have such an impact on so many people, as he did. I was lucky enough to travel on one of his Close Up trips to DC. it was an incredible learning experience and had a profound impact on my life as a result. I dedicated my vote on Tuesday to Mr. Gillen. He taught me the importance of being heard and making my vote count. I will remember him every time there is an election. You made a difference, Mr. Gillen. RIP

Condolence: I have so many fond memories of Mr. Gillen as a teacher. He was kind, smart and outrageously funny. I loved seeing him around town after he retired - he even held my daughter when she was a baby while I voted. You will be missed, Jim Gillen.

I appreciate all he did for his students, especially his commitment to getting kids to Washington DC for Closeup. I went in 1982 and it was a formative experience. Thank you, Mr. Gillen!
