Obituary for Waunita Clara Uffelman

Waunita Clara Uffelman
Waunita Clara Wick Uffelman died June 5, 2018 at the Bridge Assisted Living in Longmont, CO. She was 107 years old.
Waunita was born to John and Clara (Hoppe) Wick on a farm in Canaan County, Iowa, the youngest of eight children. She grew up on the farm being spoiled by her siblings and playing with her nieces and nephews who were close in age.
She drove her horse and buggy to a one room school in Mt. Union. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant for one year but couldn’t continue because the depression hit. There she met her future husband, Lester, through his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta and her sorority Pi Beta Phi. They married December 27, 1932. They lived with Lester’s father and brother several years and learned to cook eel.
She cherished the “Wick lore” handed down and all the happy times of her youth. She kept in touch with nieces and nephews. Her only hobby was writing letters and sending greeting cards for any occasion. The last cards were sent about a month before her passing.
Her family was the most important thing to her. She was able to be a stay at home mom and homemaker. Following her grandsons and great grandsons activities was a great past time although they never lived close.
Waunita lovingly and patiently cared for Lester as be battled Alzheimer’s and stayed in their home in Galesburg, IL until moving to Colorado in 1996 to be near their daughter.
She joined 1st Lutheran Church and walked to services a mile or so until age 92. She survived a pedestrian pick-up truck accident at age 100. Her acceptance of a six week stay at Life Care was with grace and dignity.
Her children and grandchildren have all benefitted from her unconditional love, living by the Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
After several falls, she moved to the Bridge Assisted Living in 2016. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, her parents, seven siblings and a number of nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her son, Larry (Donna) Uffelman, daughter Rita (Ramon) Hoagland, grandsons, Erich (Louise) and Jonathan (Karen), step-granddaughter Lisa, two great grandsons, Ethan and Jonah, step-great grandsons, Connor, Shannon, Zachary and Tanner and nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Waunita’s life will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday 14 June at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont, CO with reception to follow. Burial following reception at noon at Foothills Gardens of Memory in Longmont.
Consider memorials to Suncrest Hospice, 1st Lutheran Church or of donor’s choice.
The family expresses a special thanks to the loving caregivers at The Bridge Assisted Living Facility.
