Obituary for Willis Clifford ElRod

Willis Clifford  ElRod
Willis (Cliff) ElRod formerly of Longmont returned home to his Lord on February 8, 2018 surrounded by family at home in Loveland.

Cliff was born in Salida, CO to Willis ElRod and Marlene Collins. He grew up in Salida and later Commerce City, CO where he graduated from Adams City High School in 1959.

Cliff joined the U.S. Navy in 1959 and spent two years on the Destroyer Knox, attended UTD school and spent three years, two and a half tours of duty in Vietnam. While in the Navy he took classes and once Honorably discharged completed and graduated from Benchley State University in North New Hyde Park N.Y. earning a Business Degree.

He married Jeannie Gashler, later divorced, they had a son Dustin. He married Carol Youkum, later divorced, they had one daughter Shawnna, Cliff adopted one of her sons, Eric. He then married Janet McClelland in 1978 in Denver, CO, Cliff was a very devoted, loving husband and father to her two daughters Teri and Kim.

From 1966 Cliff was employed as office manager and OTR driver for Colo. Metal Sales. He continued driving OTR for Coors Transportation, Nations Way Transportation and several smaller companies until 1999 when he changed his field of work to a CDL teacher and instructor for Excel Driver Services. Cliff retired in 2007 but continued to work part time for Excel as a CDL Tester and Evaluator.

Cliff’s love of the mountains would find him deer and elk hunting every Fall. He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Internationally always looking for an adventure with his wife Janet. On their many vacations he would be scuba diving while Janet was closer to shore snorkeling. Cliff and Janet spent weekend evenings at the movies or dancing at the Clubs. He enjoyed a little gambling (up on the Hill) and joined in many poker games at the VFW, Post 2601 and The American Legion, Post 32 where he was a member. He served as Commander of the VFW for a while. He also was a former member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose Clubs.

He was preceded in death by his Dad and Mom, Willis and Marlene ElRod of Commerce City, CO and wife Janet ElRod of Longmont, CO.

Cliff is survived by son Dustin and wife Kim Berry of Goodyear, AZ, son Eric and wife Lisa ElRod of Arvada, CO, daughter Shawnna Swearnger of Aurora, CO, daughter Teri and son-in-law Tom Jones of Loveland, CO, and daughter Kim McClelland of Loveland, CO. Sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Dave Richmond of Commerce City, CO, and sister Dorothy Parsons of Ekley, CO. Twenty-two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Colorado.

A very heart felt thank you to the staff of Halcyon Hospice for their support of our family during this journey.

A celebration of life memorial gathering will be held from Noon to 4:00pm on Sat. February 17,
2018 at the American Legion Post 32 at 315 S. Bowen St. Longmont CO 80501. Please wear bright colors as this is a celebration of Cliff’s life. Interment will take place on Friday February 23, 2018 at 1:15pm at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 32 in Longmont.
