Obituary for Donald Daugherty

Donald George Daugherty, 98, formerly of Adams County, Illinois, passed away on May 7, 2018 in Longmont, Colorado.

Don was born January 5, 1920 in Quincy, IL to George and Mary (Wood) Daugherty. He grew up on the family farm and attended a one room school south of Mendon, IL. He graduated from Quincy Senior High and attended Gem City Business College. In 1941, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and honorably served for four years during WWII in Africa and Europe working as an airplane mechanic.
On May 22, 1947 he married Ruth “Betty” Aber in Hersman, Illinois. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year.

Growing up, Don attended Mendon Congregational Church where he was very active and served as a deacon, and later Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church. He worked for Gardner Denver as a machinist for over forty years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over fifty years.
Don enjoyed woodworking, gardening, carpentry, square dancing, golfing, traveling, camping with his family and spending winters in Florida with Betty.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Merle Daugherty. Don is survived by his loving wife Betty; their three children: Sandra (Charles) Straley of Longmont, CO, Jim (Karen) Daugherty of Estes Park, CO and Donna Janks of Gunnison, CO as well as eight grandchildren: Chris Walters, Jennifer Walters, Tim Walters, Eric (Karen) Daugherty, Becky (John) Luna, Beth (Paul) Stern, Sarah (Jesse) Peterson and Rebecca Janks. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren (and one on the way), and his two sisters, Marjorie Schaeffer and Marilyn Jackson.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 7 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St. Longmont, CO 80501. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3125 Quincy, IL 62305 or Suncrest Hospice, 1605 Foxtail Dr. Suite 200, Loveland, CO 80538.
