Huelan D. Sanders of Longmont, CO passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family on April 9, 2018 at the age of 76. He was born on March 18, 1942 in Earlsboro, Oklahoma to Hester May (Isom) and Bacil Sanders. Huelan attended schools in Oklahoma at Sasakwa, Cromwell and Wewoka. His higher education was at East Central State College in Ada, OK, with emphasis in math and drafting.
During his early years in Oklahoma, Huelan shared farm and ranch duties with his family, worked at a local dairy and delivered newspapers on his horse.
Huelan and (Leslie) Yvonne Hodge were married on May 30, 1964 at the First Baptist Church in Ada, OK. A year later, they moved to Boulder, CO, co-owning and managing apartments while Huelan began his 35-year career in the fire sprinkler industry. As a pioneer in this field, Huelan engineered and managed the installation of fire sprinklers in numerous high rise buildings in downtown Denver, ski resorts, convention centers, hospitals and restaurants. His legacy included managing the sprinkler system installation of The Stanley Hotel, Plains Hotel and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas after the massive fire in 1980, innovating the connection of the sprinkler system to the hotel roof swimming pool.
Following his retirement in the fire sprinkler industry, Huelan was employed as a bus driver by the St. Vrain Valley School District for 9 years before retiring in 2011. He loved working with the children, from 5 years old to high school age, mentoring and serving as a role model to them.
Huelan’s hobbies included hunting, 4-wheeling, RVing, and boating, with Alaska being his favorite place to fish.
Huelan was preceded in death by his parents: sister, Cletis Roper: brothers, James (Jim) Sanders and Carl Gene Sanders: sister-in-law, Vivian Sanders and nephew, John Sanders.
Huelan is survived by his wife, Yvonne: son and daughter, Roderick and Sheila Sanders: granddaughters, Rachel Sanders and Alycia Nemec: grandsons, Jesse Sanders and Bryce Nemec: brothers, Roger Sanders (Sherry), Alvis Sanders (Paula): sisters, Elsie Harmon (Phil), Judy Milroy (Jim): brother-in-laws, Mike Hodge (Patty) and Elvin Roper: sister-in-law Pat Dye (Clarence): numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Huelan will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his humorous wit and stories of the past.
