Obituary for John Jacks

John Ervin Jacks, Jr., 85, of Longmont passed away October 1, 2017 at the Longmont United Hospital.

He was born September 24, 1932 in Osceola, Arkansas to John Irvin and Opal (Anderson) Jacks. John grew up in Osceola and graduated from Osceola High School, class of 1950.

John enlisted in the United States Navy on May 20, 1952. He served aboard the USS Hornet and was stationed in Japan for part of his tour. He was honorably discharged on May 2, 1956. On May 22, 1954 he married Martha Jane Rose in Hernando, Mississippi.

Following his Navy service John attended Central Tech in Kansas City, MO and earned an Associates in Arts degree.

John had a long career as an engineer, mostly in the aerospace industry. He began with Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, NM followed by MacDonall Douglas in Saint Louis, MO. He moved to Colorado in 1961 and worked briefly for Martin Marietta. John spent 33 years with Ball Brothers (now Ball Aerospace). He retired in 1993.

He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Longmont where he enjoyed playing in the Bell Choir. John volunteered for Junior Achievement and the Longmont Senior Center as a tax preparer and in the kitchen for Meals on Wheels.

He was an accomplished wood worker making many things from furniture for his family and friends to cribbage boards. He loved music and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He spent many hours at bridge and cribbage. John liked the intellectual and strategic challenge of card games. He could do or fix almost anything. John also loved to tell a joke. If he could make you laugh he was a happy guy. His best jokes came when he was in a boat fishing for crappie in Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Katherine Hill.

John is survived by his wife Martha, son James Britt Jacks, daughter Julie Ann Anstine and husband Mike R., sister Martha Ann Stoffle, brother Joe Anderson Jacks, brother-in-law Robert Rose and wife Mary and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 11:00am Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. John’s ashes will be interred at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Longmont Humane Society or First United Methodist Church (Heart of Longmont) and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
