Obituary for Keith Harber

Keith Harber
Keith Maurice Harber, 74, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

Keith was born December 6, 1942 to Maurice I. and Valeria M. Harber in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. After high school, Keith started college in Ft. Wayne but finished his degree while he proudly served his country in the Navy based in California.

Keith retired as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy Reserve in 1985. His last ship was the USS Chicago, a Cruiser that served in the Pacific theater and was based in Long Beach, California. He was a life member of the US Navy Cruiser Sailors Association.

While in Long Beach, Keith met Elpidia Haggerty who ended up being his Life Companion for 44 years. After his retirement from the Navy, Keith and Elpidia moved to Longmont, in 1986, when Keith got a job at Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp where he worked on many exciting space technology programs.

He loved old cars and was an avid motorcyclist. He and Elpidia traveled on many highways riding two-up on his Triumph motorcycle. They also took many trips in Keith’s pick-up camper to Indiana where Keith’s family had a lot on a lake. Keith was a member of the VFW and was active in many of their programs.

Keith’s neighbors reflect on Keith’s passing saying, “Just that he always helped when he could and always was fun to talk with over the fence.” Another said, “And he cared for their dog, Badger…” A third said, “He was a good neighbor and served his country.”

Keith was generous to a fault and was supportive of many charities. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Keith’s name to the charity of your choice.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, Oct. 6th, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St. in Longmont. A viewing will take place at 10:00 AM prior to the Mass. Following the service, a gathering will occur at the American Legion Post 32, 315 S. Bowen St., Longmont.

Interment will occur at 11:30 AM, Monday, October 9, 2017 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, located at 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd, Denver, Colorado. We will meet at Staging Area B prior to the interment service at Shelter B where military honors will be performed by the United States Navy and the American Legion Post 32 Honor Guard.
